Realtime Worlds: an inside story

Recommended Posts

Dunno if this has been posted before, at least I couldn't find anything similar.

Here's an interesting article from "The Guardian" with insights on why developing APB was so unnecessarily expensive and how much went wrong while development - with statements from RTW ex-employees:

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/gamesblog/2010/aug/27/realtime-worlds-collapse

It was mentioned in the old APB:R forum, but it got trashed along with all the discussions we had pre-2019.

Thanks for the info. In that case I'm glad to make it accessible again for everyone here since it answers so many questions about this game and it's unique history.

It may have been expensive but only because of budget mismanagement. If you'd develop the game today without doing those mistakes and with current technology it would be much cheaper to produce.

"APB would have been an amazing game in 2006, or at least an amazing start of a game. But this is 2010"

Ouch.

I work for the gov. and this article sums it all: "When you have too much money, you just dont give a fuck."

The problem was: RTW wasnt the gov. RIP

A monument for all devs to remember,
despite the tremendous talent of the team,
there is no such thing as "Too big to fail".

Biggest irony is that GTA:O gets new free DLC two times per year, with the last one released two weeks ago, bringing back a lot of its player base.

Yes. That is the point. It didn't bankrupt the company even when it is bad.

R* and Take Two are probably in the top 3 of the biggest gaming companies.

It is impossible for a company like Take Two to go bankrupt

Yeah, but it's mostly deathmatching. GTA:O is one of the biggest missfires ever released by a game dev. Basically nobody plays this game the way its intended on public lobbies, and those that do ( like myself ) find sneaky tricks to keep the unpleasants out.

How can it be a misfire if it has a ton of players and makes the devs fat stacks of cash ?

It may not be played in the intended manner, but who really cares about that ?

Yeah but it still covers alot of questions which frequently come up from new players. And it helps them to understand the complexity of the game and thus why the engine upgrade takes so long.
