I'm by no means an expert in software development or managing projects of this kind, but it does seem remarkable that it has taken this long for a realisation that downscaling objectives was necessary. I do understand from Matt's previous posts that there were a number of methods they believed would be succesful, but I barely believed a full engine upgrade would have been enough at this point, let alone the new set of targets they have listed in the road-map here.

Whilst many of those planned changes, such as fixing RTX crashing would be very welcome, it really is only scratching the surface of the problems facing the game currently. The Engine Upgrade was only ever going to be the beginning of a new phase for APB, one where after launch the developers would still have had to work extremely hard to maintain any playerbase.

I think the issue here is while these goals may be more managable, for all the former players (supposedly, although I guess I am one by this point) hanging around awaiting news, it will be very difficult to communicate how these new set of changes will make a difference, without being drowned out by the fact that the Engine Upgrade has been cancelled. Regardlless of how this news affects the game long term, it's still a blow to know the update which has been "under development" for over half the game's life has now been permanently shelved.

Which for a game whose average Steam player base hovers barely above 200 is hardly very encouraging.

I think a part of why it took so long was cause while a number of us (including LO) were thinking it wouldn't work, we still wanted to see it work.    The only thing i personally know is 3D art stuff and world building so i can only really compare it to wanting to create something and digging yourself into a deep rut of ideas and then having to actually back pedal on a lot of them because they simply do not work.  Though you realize that much later in that process.  Not sure how to really elaborate on it really, my explaining skills are terrible.

ON THE OTHER HAND HOWEVER.  This change doesn't mean LO is only focusing on just technical stuff.  It's still too early to tell but from what i'm aware of, their content plans and other game improvement ideas are still on the table...  Somewhere...

The ultimate question though is when does any of this happen.

2018: "We have to upgrade the engine to implement some of the features that will fix the game"

2022: "Actually, we just gonna implement them into the old version lol"

What am I missing? If you could do that, why didn't you do it from the start?

Also, what about the port to UE4. Is it still happening? Was it ever? @MattScott

These are actual quotes from the official blog.

"...we are committed to upgrading APB Reloaded to the Unreal 4 engine."
"...our 2nd team is working on Unreal 4. This will not be a short project, but it has lots of milestones along the way."

This "2nd team" has been apparently working on UE4 for over 3 years now, anything to show?

This doesn't appear to have been mentioned in a blog post anywhere which is maybe why it was missed, possibly in one of the streamed Q&As somewhere but the whole UE4 idea was scrapped within a year of it starting.  Nothing of it exists and it was really nothing more than a pipe dream/idea of Matts to begin with.

Is 1.3 going to be on a newer version of the engine? I thought the current engine didn't have 64 bit support.

1.3 will be the current version of the engine.  What they're gonna be doing is changing out a bunch of internals and upgrading them from 32bit to 64bit.

So I've got this right, is this about the size of it in a nutshell?

Your timeline is somewhat wrong, 1.20 started in either 2017 or 2016.  Engine work iirc started in early 2014 or late 2013.  As of i guess this week, nothing is gonna happen with 3.5/2.x as its been put on hold basically indefinitely.

Frankly one can maybe think of this as a half win, we're not getting the engine but considering the engine was someone elses work to begin with (as in, not exclusively Reloadeds work like a lot of people think it is), this seems like a much more manageable goal.    Kinda hope we see something of it this year.

So I assume this gun's name now refers to its damage, right?

Honestly curious why people refer to this gun.  It was bad from the beginning and you never see it ingame.  It's also one single preset out of i think 6?  Sales have to be Below Zero for the last 6 years on it.

why is the infinite grenade supplier in cars not deleted still? And why is oca whisper a rifle now?

Whisper was originally like this.  Although it has 50m range, the accuracy is so bad that you typically wont hit anything beyond probably 30m.  Part of RPs weird p2w nonsense from back in the day.

That's why we should know exactly what we can win. I'm not gonna buy permanent versions of the weapons that can be won as leases, that's waste of loyalty reward.

I don't remember that ACT 44 "Pillager" PR1 was ever previously listed as reward in any regular or power boxes.

The way JMBs worked was that you could get any weapon on ARMAS as a 3, 30 or 180 day lease.  All JMBs had this but Power JMBs and some unique ones got rid of the 3 day tier.  Gold i *think* removes the 3 and 30 day tier.  There isn't really a need to include the listing for gold since it includes all legendary weapons plus a tiny handfull of perm 1 slot weapons.  There is simply way to many weapons in APB to list on the page since it will reward you a random weapon on ARMAS.

Since there's no complete list of rewards available. Could you let us what weapon leases have you won?

I have won following weapon leases so far:

    ATAC 424 NFCP 3

    Agrotech ACES Rifle R&D III

    OCA-EW 626-SD NFCP3

    Colby RSA "Hunter"

    Joker CR5

    JG-1140 "Knock-Knock"

    CSG-20 "Country Gent"

    Pathfinder PR1

    ACT 44 "Pillager" PR1

Gold box contains basically everything except the green tier i think, might also omit the blue tier.  The only additions are the 1 slot perm OCA, JG, Carbine, N-HVR 762, and N-TEC 5.

So why didn't they add the items from the xmas bundle in to the Jokerstore?

Cause stuff like that is a fair bit of effort.  Already exists on ARMAS so better to just enable its visibility there.

And no, its not some simple copy/paste, ARMAS and the JT store are entirely separate databases, have to make new DB entries and menu stuff.  Aint nobody got time for that.

A little late now, but you'd think the neater option would be to keep ARMAS as the only store and add a "Pay with JT" as well as a "Play with G1C" option to every item rather than to have an onslaught of new NPCs with cherry picked items that need to be unlocked/created as a new item just to buy them with JTs instead of G1C.

But then I guess since we can buy JTs in ARMAS, that would basically make G1C invalid and that might mess up the whole economic model of APB.

Still would be nice if everything was earnable in game for ""free"" and using irl $ was only the option for those too impatient/rich to bother grinding for elf ears.

This is going in the opposite direction amusingly enough, Joker Stores will replace ARMAS basically.  Still no idea what will come of ARMAS in the future, likely phased out entirely i guess.

Yeah, I can't fathom why there is steam login option if it doesn't work...

Manual login seems to work, after I took the time to figure out what my password was...

Its there cause it'll be used when the game goes Live, but for now the Steam setting is only tied into 1.20.  I believe steam can only be tied into one version of a game at a time.

I can log in to the live version with no problems. With the beta I just keep getting the "error 9".

I may need to dig deeper into this...

Yeah, not the same game and i don't think they connect to the same servers either.  (I think its the same locations but the units and everything is whats different.)  Steam login doesn't work either if thats what you're trying

I'm still amazed LO keeps breaking the Ntec (and its variants) rather than accepting that it was one of the very few weapons that have been built properly, and that the other weapons should be equally as usable as the Ntec in their own ways.

How I see it is that the Ntec-5 (used to be) the jack of all trades but a master of none, and the Ntec-7 being very close to that with just a *slight* disadvantage in closer ranges and a *slight* advantage in longer ranges and looking way cooler (imo) than the Ntec-5.
The recent changes now is revolved around breaking the Ntec and trying to push it into a niche were it doesn't belong and where there are other variants of weapons that excel in those niches. Like how the Obeya now demolishes the Ntec-7 and how the FAR variants easily defeats the Ntec-5 in medium ranges and the Whisper now being the go to for closer ranges.

I understand that the Ntec was the meta for quite a while, and I believe it is because the weapon was actually consistent and usable, unlike so much other weapons that I really question its existence in the first place. And because of that, LO was keen on nerfing the meta in order to allow newer players to be able to join the game and have fun, but lets be real here. How many new players actually try apb and stick to it even after such changes keep coming over and over? How many games have metas and still have many players joining the game and having fun and be able to grow on the skill gap scale? Is removing metas actually a significant change compared to better game performance, game marketing, gfx improvements, better matchmaking, server performance, etc..? Especially in a game which breaking the weapon variety stability will only piss off current players but is insignificant to newer players because they don't feel compelled to the game (or don't even know about the game) due to a million other reasons.

Aside from actually a few wise decisions regarding weapon changes, I think you guys did enough damage and stop tinkering with the weapons hoping that new players would appreciate such changes.

Feel like you're confusing the N-TEC 5 with the STAR 556.  The N-TEC has always been out of line, but the STAR is considered the only balanced gun in the game.  Not only labeled a jack of all trades (literally) but it does a bit of everything without being god awful or particularly strong.  Only real issue with the STAR is its moist sounding audio, otherwise a perfect gun.

I dont want to accusate in particolar someone, but maybe you should tell too who give the ""suggestions"" to ""balacing" the weapon to from a pocket obir to a total hot trash using your words since over a year at  now.....

But at least I  see a improving than last year,  the opinion of "someone" until some time ago  were completely different and defend strenuously telling the RFP  now it was perfectly balanced 🤣

The RFP was a result of early tests and just general learning of how things should go.  Though i do not know why the RFP has been stuck in its current state for over a year.  Lost track of how many times it was brought up and swept.  It's not anyone in particulars fault however.
