Returning Player: Did the Engine Upgrade die?

Recommended Posts

Used to play this game a shit ton. Maxed out Enf/Crim etc and dropped out over the years. Last time I played it was 2016 and the "engine upgrade" was coming. I saw the LO buyout, and they had a monthly forum post on progress.

I come back now after seeing APB has an update in my steam new, to find the engine upgrade thread last posted to in 2021 and its locked.

The TLDR is, Little Orbit decided to update the existing game's engine to 64 bit instead of upgrading to a later engine. Currently, APB runs as a 64 bit application. You shouldn't get the out of memory errors like you used to with modern GPUs, and your framerate should be a little higher.

They have many blog posts about it. This is just the first when they made the 64 bit decision. https://www.gamersfirst.com/apb/news/2022/8/5/message-from-matt

As others have said, the engine upgrade was unable to go ahead, however the game is now 64 bit which has allowed for new updates.

Things are improving, and yes there are players who will complain on the forums about how badly things are going, because when new updates come out, there will be kinks to iron out. Thankfully, the spirit of APB is still alive and we have some new modifications, weapons and contacts. It's just my hope that LO continue to revive the game as they inherited a mess.

From a 3D sphere to what we have now, it's a massive leap considering what could have been. People are no longer complaining about med spray, the OBIR was nerfed and some of the weaker weapons are finally viable in combat.

It's a little bittersweet.
