''New'' Contacts / Ideas for new progression

Recommended Posts

Hey, recently, i started leveling new characters because it felt pointless to keep playing on my main character and i've had way more fun because i felt like i was progressing towards something. Also, out of boredom i started looking into the APB files and saw that there was a couple contacts that never made it into the game or got added in as ''shop'' NPC's in the Asylum map when it was released. I know this is old news probably to some but i think it would be good to talk about it.

First of all, i want to talk about the Fight Club Contacts from asylum. They are a great adition for newer players as they give an accessible Shop in the district and removes the need to go to social/Mission districts to buy some new guns to try, modifications, cars and all of the other stuff. For the veterant players they are completely useless and feel like wasted potential. They could be so much more. They have the potential to add a new reason to play Fight Club. Right now, it is just a place where people farm kills, money and joker tickets. My take on it would be for them to unlock normal stuff like clothing, guns and new mods and also add a new ranking system that would show up on the Scoreboard next to your normal Rank. FC Ranks would have different icons up to a certain point and you could put your mouse over the icon to see the exact level and have infinite progression levels on the contact. Not too sure if that is a realistic idea considering the limitations of APB but i still think it would be great to have something to show for your endless hours of fragging in FC. It goes without saying that i think that they should add a Criminal and Enforcer contact to Baylan Shipping.

Here is some unreleased contacts. They can also be found on APB.DB

''Inky/Binky/Winky/Pinky'' (https://apbdb.com/contacts/Inky/)

On the APB.DB website, Each of them share the same profile picture and also share the same biography wich is a shortened copy of LaRocha's. This probably means that this group was scrapped before they got to the point of design and character development. They remind me of Tiptoe and her brood. The Inky group was probably scrapped/modified to be Tiptoe instead as she is the only contact that has other gang members around her and both groups are assigned to the Blood Rose faction on APB.DB

I would personally love to have the Inky group as an unlockable Contact as Tiptoe and her clique have the most badass character designs and hangout spot in the game (IMO)

''Clyde''

There is nothing i could find for Clyde. Still, it shows that there was more contacts in the works but got scrapped pretty early for unknown reasons

''Red Rain''

Same as Clyde, could not find anything about him but considering his name. He would've probably been a Criminal Contact.

Conclusion

APB has been out for almost a decade now and we have not had anything new to work on other than seasonal events and the disastrous flop that RIOT was. I believe it would be in the best interest to have a new contact or some other form of progression to work on. I don't even consider gun roles as progression since it is so SLOW to level up and does not feel rewarding at all and to my knowledge there was only one Player that even came close to completing all of them and all he did was brainlessly kill people all day in fight club. Unfortunately that is the only progression available to me now other than making new characters and level up all the way to 255 over and over again just to feel a slight sentiment of progress.

I would love to see your ideas for new content / theories for what those scrapped contacts could've been. Have a good day.

not even gonna mention YoDawg? v:

also, fairly sure but dont quote me on it; red rain was supposed to be a crim faction like g-kings and blood roses and yodawg was part of it. probably never made it past concept stage and yodawg but who knows

Research history of it. Old forums are gone but APB community was in flames over their kickstarter.

Game was in burning ruins and they decided that mobile game is better investment of time - showed their detachement from reality.

I expect characters are half-baked (if they even have lore).

So Pagan Bloodrose (Criminal) and Simon Tran (Enforcer) started out as unused tutorial contacts, later repurposed to be "experimental" mission givers in Waterfront, and now reside in Asylum as a shop.
They could be used for more, and personally I'd like to see them return to the normal mission districts one day.

Also if they were to add "shop" contacts into Baylan/Beacon, I think it'd be better to add them as some sort of physical manifestation of the fight club voice contacts. There's like 8 different voices for fight club missions but no faces attached to them.

Inky, Binky, Pinky, Winky, and Clyde, alongside LCTester1/2/3, are part of old testing districts, and are/were likely used to check contact progression systems/UI while the game was being developed.

I doubt they're scrapped contacts or an early predecessor of Tiptoe. The likely reason some have an early/short LaRocha's bio was to check how the UI handled larger quantities of text.

Some of their names are also a sly reference to the english nicknames for the ghosts in Pacman.

If they used an actual contact model, I'd imagine they'd have used either a placeholder model or YoDawg's model.

Speaking of which, the picture Binky, Pinky, and LCTester2/3 share is the contact portrait of YoDawg. He was the apparent leader, or perhaps social contact, of the third planned criminal faction Red Rain.

Red Rain was the "big name" criminal faction that would occupy the Midtown district alongside the enforcers SPPD faction.

Good news is there's a new contact on the horizon once the Engine Upgrade™ is released. Being Lynette Casey for enforcers, and Lucas Van Rooyen for criminals.

Supposedly they're bringing new toys and new levels. Though apparently the team is looking into reducing their 20 level specialist status.

I do agree that it would be nice to have something to work towards beside weapon roles.

APB: Vendetta was their failed attempt at bringing in additional funding for their engine upgrade efforts. Apparently their intention was to develop this arena shooter in the newer version of Unreal to acquaint themselves with it and bring that newfound knowledge back to the upgrade process. Didn't quite pan out though.

As for the characters present in the kickstarter post, 6 of them are already in-game, while the other 5 are various concept designs from prior artists.

It would be interesting seeing them appear in-game, however most of the concept art characters have wildly varied designs to what gets used as actual contacts.

You may be confusing APB: Vendetta with APB: Retribution. Retribution was the bizzare iOS mobile game, from Blazing Griffin, that came out of nowhere. Vendetta was the Reloaded teams attempt at making another PC game.

I mixed it up indeed.

Still, do you say thinga this game is anything but barebones? Even place-holders characters appear to be APB: Reloaded characters, same goes for all assets in that game.

Vendetta looked like it was a prototype. I'd hazard a guess that nothing substantial was developed outside of the basic small map, the primitive movement, and maybe that Gossamer model.

Maybe, with the team at the time, they might have had some basic story/lore set out. But then again, we got presets with no text later that year so who knows what state it was in...

Can't say much on Retribution though. Didn't have an iOS device at the time, and it looks like it's no longer available to download nowadays. Though what little I have seen leaves a lot to be desired.

in one of the q&a’s mattscott confirmed that the vendetta trailer was all that was ever created for that game

Lilith posted the link to the old forums a while ago: https://forums-old.gamersfirst.com/

However, there's a 522 error, and thus the forums are unreachable. 😞 Didn't realize that I couldn't access them anymore.
