It's been a while since I've seen a good generic video game discussion. I'm not necessarily a big fan of the top 3, top 10 etc. style of topics, but I think this will actually create some good discussion. So here goes.

Quite self-explanitory, just name your top 5 games. Singleplayer or Multiplayer, Xbox vs. PS3 vs PC, Minecraft or Atari, doesn't matter. You can reach your top list by any approach you want, but I based mine off pretty much everything, including memories. I'm gonna list some close contenders for my list because as I said, it's not really the list that matters; it's the discussion :).

But anyway, it took me forever to narrow down a list, mostly because I suck at choosing.

1. Assassin's Creed II
This game comes on top for me for a number of reasons. I'm usually more of an RPG fan, so this game surprised me. Great story, alot of gameplay hours for an Action/Adventure game, amazing music for the most part, good voice acting, fantastic environments, and most importantly, I feel very enthralled the whole time and every time I play it.

2. Mass Effect
I own ME2 but haven't played it yet, so you bet I'm excited as hell to play it. ME created a great sci-fi universe, a great story, and had an excellent RPG feel to it. It was one of those games I played the hell out of. Only two complaints I really have about it is the repetition of the side-quests on random planets and the clumsy inventory. Can't believe it doesn't mark what's equipped when selling items. It makes frequent, quick trading impossible.

3. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Everything about this game is amazing. I feel the environments you travel through the game is my favorite part, though. I almost always ended up actually traveling rather than fast travel through the whole game. Music is unparred for an RPG imo. Great quests, gameplay, re-playability, etc.

4. Fable 2
This game is dead-beat easy, which is the major turn-off for me, but other than that, it's a great game. Pretty good story (not the best) but good RPG elements for sure. The monetary system is awesome, and it gives much more of an adventurist feel than the first Fable which creates a Guild's Pet sort of theme.

5. Star Wars: KOTOR
Game's not amazing nowadays, but probably the best memories I have of any game. Probably played this game 20 times, every time pretty similar for being an RPG admittedly, but it's just great. Awesome music, good leveling system, and nothing is over-complicated. The selling point is probably the story, which is my favorite in any game yet including the twist.

Some runner-ups:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Midnight Club: LA
Halo 2
Splinter Cell

The only ones I've actually cared to play or beat, was Mario Bros., Splinter Cell, and Tetris.

1. Final Fantasy 7-10 - Hands down my favorite bunch of games I've ever played. All of them have amazing stories and gameplay, they truly define what a single player RPG should be. 7 gets my vote for best story, though, and I just beat it (as in mastering every materia mastered, beating Ruby and Emerald Weapon, as well as the storyline) for my 2nd time ever. I'm still obsessed with the game even though I started playing (not knowing what I was doing) at age 8 on the PS1.

2. Call of Duty 4 / Call of Duty 2 - Because they're both two of the only good shooters ever made. The rest of the cod's are sh*t btw (except 1, 1 was pretty good.)

3. Elder Scrolls Series - Morrowind, Oblivion and Oblivion's Expansion (Shivering Isles) were all amazing.

4. GTA Series - San Andreas, 3, Vice City and 4 were all fantastic games.

5. Assassin's Creed II/Brotherhood - I see them as very similar games, one story spring boarding off the other obviously. Brotherhood has a cool MP style too.

Yes, I know I listed mostly little groups of games from a series, but I classify most games as good through their series, not just one game out of them all.

I think we can safely say that San Andreas wins due to most people voting it.

The game is a masterpiece.

Never once played any of the GTA series. Don't really know what makes these games so amazing, especially SA. Just looks like a sandbox game to me.

FIFA. Also used to be a big fan of NHL, not so much anymore.
AoE. Used to play so much when I was younger. Sadly, I was terrible. :)
Halo.
GTA Vice city / San Andreas.
Fable.

I wouldn't say this is my top 5. I don't even know my top 5. These are a few out of my favourites though. Most of them were played at younger age. :P

Same :).

For me it's pretty simple:

1) MGS4 (the best story mode I have ever seen by miles).
2) Football Manager Series/LMA Manager
3) Goldeneye
4) NFS Underground
5) Gran Turismo

1) Goldeneye 007
2) Banjo & kazooie
3) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
4) Resident Evil
5) Pokemon red & blue

and some more because I feel like listing and I can't sort them into order:

Fahrenheit
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Fable
Black & White
Lylat Wars
Timesplitters 2
Metal Gear Solid
GTA 1, 3, VC and SA.
ISS/Pro Evo
Gran Turismo
Luigis Mansion
Chu Chu Rocket
Mario Games
Broken Sword

Soz got carried away.

Anyone else think the further through the console generations we go, the less exciting the games are becoming? There's very few games from this generation I'll be remembering as fondly as the games listed above.

When they first came out, it was the scale of the city/cities, random violence and humour that was so appealing. GTA3 made it all 3d and it made a huge difference. Vice City added a tonne of new things and San Andreas added probably anything they could think of with the exception of children and animals. Personally, I thought GTA4 was boring once I got over the fancy graphics, whether it was because it didn't have 1/8th of what San Andreas had or whether the whole GTA concept is getting stale now, idk.

I understand what you're saying, but then there's breakthroughs like ME and Oblivion, imo. I noticed you listed Fable; have you tried Fable 2? Game is much better than the first to me. Third one is trash though.

I know, think that's why I wasn't that fussed about GTA4. The whole "freedom" concept has gotten a bit stale for me, prefer a good story to follow etc. Oblivion is amazing, I'd forgotten about that one. Haven't played the first Mass Effect but I'm steadily making my way through the second now. I heard they're a little different from each other with ME being more stats based and ME2 being more actiony.

Oh, I have Fable 2 on the 360, haven't played it though. Will give it a go, one day.

as if no one has said command and conquer ;/

Forgot about it. I absolutely ****d Red Alert 2.

Indeed, when I look at the upcoming games now, I don't think I must buy that. I think it's partly because the development of game has hit somewhat of a brick wall in the way they make the user feel like he's really connected to the game. The good old games always threw in surprises because it turns out they were better than anyone could have expected, the development rate was huge. The difference between Gran Turismo 1 and 2 for example, was staggering, it was the same for 2 and 3 too.

Or maybe it's because every possible type of game has been made, each with it's own niché, where else is there to go?

Imo AoE ends up being better than C&C, but then again they're completely different RTS games. Kinda hard to judge them when they're different.

Was gonna say this. Most RTS games simply cannot be compared because of how different they are.

I know what you mean. I personally think AoE destroys any other RTS game out there. But I wouldn't compare the two because they're completely different.
