I've tried it a few times, but it ends up corrupting the ui, and I've seen many ui's with awesome vitals, so it begs the question, how do I do dis?

It's really worth thoroughly reading through the pinned threads especially if you plan on starting from scratch. Everything you need to know is already explained there. There is defined areas for the graphic interface, and I assume you're just working on top of that defined area with no regard for the set boundaries. I use Adobe Photoshop CS6 for UI, others I know use Paintdotnet and I think Gimp too.
