Mr. Draft, :nicethread: ;D

Looks promising - with words and actions like those, I for one will be returning to check it out.

I especially find that test setup with a desktop cpu interesting, and I'm actually quite confident it'll handle the pressure given optimal cooling :)
For the engine, that cpu packs a serious punch :)

Nice read. I'm interested in seeing how the OverKill hardware holds up.

Thanks TechMech, although there is quite a bit of info I didn't get there it looks promising so lets hope these tests give us the results we want.

Am i right in saying that the blog post said with this new Overkill hardware, you COULD theoretically run the server FPS at 60? dude 30 is fine LOL

Right - it COULD run the server at 62 FPS. That's why it's going to be named OverKill. We are hopeful it will live up to its name during real world testing.

New Year's resolution of better communication still holding up after a whole month! Impressive, considering I abandoned mine the next day lol
All this good stuffs about server upgrades seem great. I for one really want them to work out, even if they don't perform exactly as expected. Here's to new hope

It's going to be a very exciting test. Eventhough you lose 2 cores pr. cpu, the cpu itself (3930K) is ~1/3 of the price of the x5570. Haven't checked the mobo's, but I can only imagine the high end desktop series to be cheaper than the server boards aswell. Put simply, all the fancy things the x5570 and matching server board does better in a server environment are kinda irrelevant for APB, as it needs the single cores to run as high frequency as possible... right? :)

I like the idea :)

" But this tension between short term and long term goals (survive today, but plan for a 5+ year lifespan) means that every day we struggle with what we should focus on next; features, maps (Asylum anyone?), game content, security or optimization? All of these are pressing needs for one reason or another. "

Maps? asylum and another one? :Wowzers:

Good timing with that, was about to quit APB. I already forgot how it feels to 2-shot people with shotgun.

OUR hardware, software and network vs. YOUR hardware, software and network.
In this post we have only talked about server side processing and optimization, and have not touched the OTHER things that also affect performance First and foremost - you need a good gaming rig to play APB. We always recommend having 8GB of RAM and using 64-bit Windows 7. Anything less is asking for trouble. In particular using 64-bit Windows is critical. Also client-side FPS in most Unreal games tends to drop dramatically during very large semi-transparent VFX events (i.e. very big explosions where the player does NOT die - something APB of course has a lot of) so only higher end graphics cards tend to perform ok during those big VFX events (and to optimize that part of the engine code is a whole other ball of wax, far beyond the scope of this current post).

So what you're saying is pre 1.10/1.10.1 where my machine was running around 100fps on high with drops to 75 fps in combat to where it runs now is barely 75 on medium and drops to less then 30 any giving time. Is my fault? Oh yea, when I drop it to low I barely get 50 fps....

Wait, it tries to load everything in the district in a single loop? ...ouch. That explains a lot.

Thanks a ton for sticking to your New Years resolution guys. It makes us feel a ton better when you tell us what's wrong, why its wrong, and what your doing about it. Things are definitely looking up this year.

I'll go into district and spread the good news for all those who aren't on the forums all day like us.

This is great news. And I sincerely hope it helps the server-side performance.

BUT, there is still the question of client-side performance from 1.10 to 1.10.1. You need to look into that as well. And as you can see from my signature, I don't have a slouch for a PC. In fact, it's using the same processor that you plan to use for your new servers. The difference between those two patches is very stark. On Russia I get 100fps consistently while streaming like I did with 1.10 and with 1.10.1 I can't. And even the 80 or so FPS that I do get, it feels very choppy.

Awesome to hear and very promising. It goes a long way when someone from G1's side listens to our concerns and tries to help fix problems.

Holy crap, I feel smarter having read all of that. XD

Honestly wish I could see how the new server hardware holds up first-hand, but I'm not a tester so sucks to be me. ^^; At least the optimization patch should be coming fairly soon. Here's hoping!:applause:

It is good that they have let us know what is happening with the servers and all of that and I am very pleased. Still Considering they can only work on one project at a time, I would have made sure the game runs better before adding in new content and weapons balance. Still I am not sure if they get to choose what they focus on so moot point. Still the main thing that people cry about has finally been addressed, we can all pat G1 on the back when the new tec goes live, feel good for a while and then cry about something else which is a lot less important.

This is great news! Can't wait to see how this all turns out.

Wish I could+1 the original post!

Edit: does this mean 30 server fps once more down the line? (assuming all goes well whenever this stuff works it's way to live that is)

To be fair games like CS run at tick rates of 64 and 128 on competitive servers. We could always use of higher ;)

I thought one of the devs said cars acted all hinky at 30fps. Mayhaps I'm just remembering wrong, b/c I can't find the original post. Even if they do.......30FPS! I can only dream at this point.

Sound harsh, but first see, then believe.

All nice stories of stuff comming, i rather see it myself, then i'll judge about it. See how many couldnt wait for balance patch or new stuff, look how it is atm?

I see all things 'comming soon', i'll wait those first then.

Sure. If we lower the district population to 32 people we could easily run at 128FPS server tick. But it would be pointless unless you are actually playing in a LAN game (where the server is running on someone's desktop and the player packets never leave the local network).

But it's not a bad idea for in case we release a future game that permits LAN play or dedicated private server play.

Well - we first have to roll it out on OTW (which is our semi-public test system). If you are interested, you can actually apply to participate in the SPCT test program (in fact right now 1.10.2 is running on OTW's 'original' hardware in preparation for its big launch, and then we will switch out the hardware and run 1.10.2 on the new hardware).

There is a method to the madness (albeit sometimes we readily admit the long process chain mean these big changes take some time before they are fully publicly live).
