Earlier this week Omochabox mentioned in a feedback thread that players currently often have to fight the UI for information in APB. I agree. APB is not an exception, though: many games (PC games in particular) have a terrible UI. Too many menu's which take too many mouse clicks to navigate through or a UI that is so basic that it doesn't allow you to do what you want or get the information you are looking for. APB's UI isn't terrible, but it could be better. Fortunately, G1/Reloaded are open to suggestions, so we can help make it better!

If you have any UI suggestions, this is the place to post them.


My first part of UI suggestions is on the Marketplace. The next part will most likely be on the Music Studio. Comments and feedback are appreciated.

  • Change the checkbox to really only show usable items: So no other faction, opposite gender or higher rating items you can't use.

  • Add a search box to search by item name. This would search for the original item name (cars and clothes) in addition to player given names.

  • When clicking the search box to find a player, let the player enter a name right there without a pop-up screen.

  • This one may be tough to implement, but icons for clothing and cars show the dominant color for the item. This way you can skip clothing with colors that don't fit your outfit and those pink Mikro's you don't like.

  • Clothing preview zooms in on the item instead of showing an entire body. Some items are too small and textures are too blurred to really get a good look at them.

  • Add a magnifier button for symbols that allows the player to view a symbol at full size. Symbols have the same issue as small clothing items: you can't get a good look at them.

  • The many pages of symbols make it difficult to find the symbol you are looking for. The solution would be to allow players to choose one category for the symbols they auction. You could have categories like logo, cartoon, word/letter art, animals, objects and misc. Another way would be to categorize symbols by the surface they are intended for: car vinyls, tattoos and clothing prints.

  • Same suggestion for themes and songs. Let players pick one genre the theme/song fits in.

  • Currently you can't tell when someone has made the minimum opening bid on your item. Add the three cards icon to the item in "My auctions" screen when someone has made a bid on your item.

  • When the player tries to auction a symbol, theme or song he made himself, place a copy of the item on the marketplace. Most people like to hang on to their creations, anyway.

  • When the player tries to auction an item that has to be refurbished first, allow him press the select button and then pop up the refurbish screen. If the player decides to refurbish the item, take him right to the Create Auction (start/buy price) screen. This removes several clicks from the auctioning process.

A better and faster visualization update to read when I'm badly hurt and a very clear definitive way to tell when I have immediately reached max HP.

I know there is a BEEP noise after being damaged which is not in sync with the current clotting mod changes.

The old minimap radar during rtw beta days of the HQ top down image. the resources are already there. I'm talking about these images.

Maybe allow us to reposition the minimap to where we feel fit as well as other UI elements. I personally would like to have all my information located around and very near my crosshair.

A simple useless rev meter tied to the minimap to know when we have hit top speed with a mph/kph gauge.

All of these suggestions are exactly what I have been thinking for a while, especially the item spesific search on the marketplace.
Another thing that I find bit 'annoying' is the /FPS display, which is overlaying the kill list (who killed who and with what). I like to know what my fps is at and my latency at any given moment.

I believe it was Revoemag would said that one of the reasons they hadn't done this yet is because the top speeds would look silly. Most of the cars only do something like 50 mph. Most players probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference if the gauge showed 75, though.
Most games of this type don't have a speedometer (although Crackdown does) and I always miss it. I always played GTA1 with the cheat porkcharsui that showed how fast you were moving.

The old maps are great. They were probably removed due to the higher memory requirements, but it would be nice if you could access them in game. Maybe a toggle in the options.

Here's one concept I did for a health bar.
I wrapped it around the mini map to avoid clutter, also keeping to APB's transparent hud

The numbers outside of the bar would turn red to give you some little notification that you're quite low on health and yet it's not in your face about it.

I didn't go for Changing colour health bar as it wouldn't fit in with APB's HUD as its only a few colours mostly greys and orange.

I was thinking of adding a Stamina bar to the bottom half of the mini map but that may become confusing and unnecessary as stamina only decreases by falling and getting hit by weapons.

Also bit Offtopic here but @Hordeau I plan on working on those maps again and updating them with locations of car spawns and shiz, I think it was you asked me if I was gonna finish them back in the old thread lol

Please make it descend instead of ascend, it was so confusing for me to come from a game like TF2 and for this info to ascend like it does.

The ingame map is cluttered with icons in areas, itd be awesome to have one icon represent two, if possible. D:

Make different factions different colors(on the map and HUD) such as G-Kings green and Bloodrose red.

Field Supply Icon - An ammo box icon would represent this more clearly

Font change...i think you've mentioned this, but ill just reiterate. Mainly the difference between I's and L's

Would be awesome and less frustrating if this could be two tabs, not a dropdown.

Roles in character info - the role number in the actual icon is difficult to see

"Pay off" tab on contacts could renamed to like "Bribe Notoriety Down" or something that runs along the lines of 'bribe to keep you under the radar'.

This last one is my opinion but ill do it anyhow. :flower:
Generally the the location thing under the area is useless, its just more UI clutter. I would actually like to see weather forecast in there instead, since it actually effects how you play.

The location information could be moved to the map HUD, where it mostly belongs.

Edit: Oh! Progress bars for objectives. That would be nice.
Show the progress of objectives while your teammates are doing with a point, or the progress they had(before they died or got distracted by an enemy)

Bugs to be aware of!
sSometimes the model of the perc. nades dont show up, and use the wrong icon. They also steal the frag's icon in the 'X killed xx with y' <--Not sure if bug still exists

Move the match stats screen that pop-ups at the end of missions. It pop-ups right in the middle of the screen, it's freaking annoying.

put it on top or bottom plz. i'll draw a blue cat for you if you do (or make it done).

Here's one concept I did for a health bar.

Good illustrations. I've never really been a fan of the regenerating life thing, partly because you can't see exactly how much health you have. An added benefit would be that it takes a small advantage away from cheaters, who already have a health bar.

I have been thinking about this one as well. Interacting with the field supply kit, mobile supply unit or Joker ammo vending machine would open the weapon tab. Omochabox mentioned loadouts in this thread. That would be great in combination with the inventory suggestion.

This one is a pretty big issue. Cheaters with llllllllll names that can't be reported, names that take several tries to ignore, add to friends list, etc.

A lot of good suggestions, commenting on all of them would take too long. :)

Give us the option to Check / Un-check, whether or not we can see the available Cargo space of a vehicle when we mouse over it.

I would love to know if my Van was 25/25 Cargo while Ram Raiding instead of having to get in and get out, every time just to check how much space I have left.

It would definitely be nice if we could see the rewards Contacts give out in the Progress window. Right now you need to enter a combat district to figure that out; then if you want to find out what mods one of those guns comes with you need to talk to a contact and track down the gun in the Buy menu.

And the Roles window should display the rewards you get for ranking up roles.

Making all this information accessible in Character Info would be fantastic.

I would very much like to see an option to change the location of the minimap.
I've been playing the game for 2 months now, not daily but quite a bit, and I am still not used to it being bottom right.
It just doesn't work for me, and I can't count the times I've gotten run over because I didn't see a car coming.

Every other game I've ever played has had the minimap, if available, at the top of the screen, usually top left.
And since I still play other games as well, I don't think I'll ever get used to bottom right.

I like every of your ideas; except for the bars for objectives, they can be inplented but not like you're doing the objective, maybe just a bar on top or bottom of your screen would be better imo, and a toggle option ofcourse

I hope this is the right place for this.

This is such an easy, easy improvement. It has to be.

The compass. Myself and my teammates use it a lot for tactical control of the battle.

Please make the directional points bigger (N,E,S,W) and make them stand out from the compass. It should be at a glance, not a peer.

It'd really make things that much easier.

It should be:
"He's coming from the North!"
Not
"He's coming in from the......uh........ North."

How about some options for crosshairs?
White lines are not my favourite, since those often seem to disappear in the flaming battle when there's lots of stuf going on the screen.

I'd like to at least change the color of it to red or green, and maybe set the thickness of lines in the crosshair to 2 or 3 pixels. Or even a single red dot in the middle and nothing else.
Just to spot it better in the close range shoot outs.

I believe this troubles some other players too, since there already is available a hack that does something like this, tho I didn't manage get it work. :)

I hope this is the right place for this.

im not good with creating stuffs, and i cant think of a game that has a good example either.
Simply put though, an equipment rose as opposed to the menu pages would be sweet.

it sucks when you need to switch equipment in the middle of a mission but get mowed down in the menu cause its too clunky to navigate. The current process is:

Press "i"
Click Character tab
Select Equipment
Click Change
Scroll through to equipment
Equip

It should be a lot more streamlined, a rose i think is the best solution. Or loadouts, as you mentioned above.

Press i
Mouse over Weapon, Wep/Char/Veh Mod, or Equipment slot
Dropdown box opens
Select equip (item equips)

One thing that would be really helpful in clan management is to have a "last activity" for all members of a clan, so that the officers can see who is actually active in the game or not.

Also, it would be helpful to have in-game ranks within the clan that can be set by the leader of the clan for all the members. Maybe 4 either preset named ranks (probationer, member, senior member, leader) or 4 ranks that can have customized names so that each clan can match whatever rank they are on their clan's forum as well.

i love both of these ideas as well. preferably being able to name our own ranks, and set access, similar to Global Agendas clan management.

In a mission on the score menu add some sort of status bar so you know how the mission will impact your reputation.

Ex if you win this you get 200 points up in threat level $13000 and 1000 standing

If you lose your threat level will drop 200 points $25 200 standing

I have no idea how missions will effect my threat sometimes i win a bunch for it to go up other times i lose one mission and my threat level goes down would be good to have some sort of bermoter . More insentive to try winning

i think the idea of the stamina bar would be useful :) expecially seeming i play as a crim mainly and id like to know when im close to being stunned.

I would like to suggest being able to re-size parts of the ui individually instead of just having one scale bar for the entire ui. IE: make only the radar/compass bigger/smaller instead of the whole entire ui. I can't stand having the whole ui in my face but this would make it so much better to be able to have a little adjustments like that. Also on top of all that it would be nice to be able to move things in the ui around as well to give us a little bit more customization of it all.

I posted this as its own post. I did not realize it belongs here. Here it is:

We all know the miniscule little dot that is in the center of the screen while driving. It provides us lots of tactile feedback. It tells crims what to ram-raid. It tells enforcers which cars have been stolen. It tells you about the character that it is over, it tells you alot of stuff. I have had issue with it many times. Sometimes, when driving fast, it is very hard to get that thing centered over the desired target. This is partly because it is very, very small and partly because it is white and gets lost in the background. It is also because the mouse controls it and that whole thing just gets crazy when driving.

I want it to be more than one pixel in size. I think it should be at least 4 pixels, if not 9. I actually have no idea how many pixels it is, I just think it needs to be just a little bigger. And I want it to be BRIGHT PURPLE so it does not blend into the background EVER!

I also want the information to be displayed a little better. When I am in a car chase or something, I am navigation between all the previously greifed cars and trying to avoid pedestrians and trying to get a bead on the target and I cannot see what it tells me because I am looking in the center of the screen so I can effectively navigate, but the info is at the bottom of the screen and it flashes up and gone and up and gone and up and gone as I navigate/train the crosshair on my target. I would actually like to see a small box RIGHT BELOW THE DOT with the info that the dot brings up. Not very big at all, actually, smaller than the information that is displayed at the bottom would do just fine, even half the size. You see, when I do get the information the little dot is providing, I take my eyes off the road for a split second and WHAM! Indestructible lightpole! There was no point to getting the info cause I can't use it now anyway.

Please enhance the little dot by making it larger, allowing me to choose it's color, and by putting the information it provides in a more obvious place.

I know the counter to my request for information is that "I don't want that in the middle of my screen". This will be a dominant challenge to my suggestion. I cannot figure how else to display the information. Perhaps the information fades out, rather than be there and gone instantaneously. The problem is not being able to absorb that info. I mouse over the car, get the player name, etc, but by the time I even locate the info on the screen (in a nano--second) the car is gone (it has swerved, turned, or clipped a pole and is now behind me) and I never get to read it.

Making a good UI is not very hard if you know the basic principles of usability.
still, so many gamedesigners do it wrong.

APB's UI is not all that bad.. its decent but room for improvement tho.
i've seen worse :)

You'll see grey when you are almost stunned.
Bars and regenerative variables dont combine well.
Game design, Usability, User Experience.....

You'll see grey when you are almost stunned.
Bars and regenerative variables dont combine well.


for somereason my screen doesnt show my health/stamina at all. it barley makes any changes.

Heres an idea for the car marketing. (option to view vehicle sounds - siren / horn / engine and also a zoom bar to see smaller details. maybe even a small box of what it says on the licence plate.

im not sure if this would fall into the same topic. but it would also be great if before purchasing the symbol. we could see how it would look on our vehicle or clothing or as a tattoo before purchasing (ive had many cases where ive bought a symbol and it hasnt fit properly.

finally. not sure if this would fit either. but an option to lock the charactor view from the direct front and back. like you can on the sides of a car. and also to add an option to mirror symbols. im sick of spending hours aligning symbols, then going into action and realising there odd.

I would like for the killboard and chat to not disappear when a person dies. I'm tired of hitting "home" to see if anyone is saying anything, or frantically asking "did I get him?" after a death. In big games the killboard goes by so fast you might not even get a chance to see if your batdoodoo crazy plan to explode everything and yourself actually worked.

The whole "fade to gray" thing is just frustrating.

Your entire screen should go gray/red-ish when your having low hp/stamina.
if not, did you modify any ini files or playing in low settings? it might be disabled in low or unchecked in options advanced menu

Engine and siren sound preview buttons on the marketplace.

Don't really have a picture of it, but imagine just having a button at the car you selected to buy where you can preview the sound and a button to preview the sirens if the car has sirens, so that you know what sounds the car has that you're about to buy.

I think nobody mentioned it before, so here. One of the small annoyances in APB is the "siren" APB:R logo when you get opposition. It's big and obnoxious and can be troublesome when you are driving:

I guess you can see how it can be annoying at times. Especially in heavy traffic. My idea is: either make it semi-transparent like this:

These are just quick'n'dirty mock-ups, but I guess you can get the idea. That way we could still see what's on the road.


My other idea concerns weapon changing during missions. I have no problem with being forced to use Field Supplier or finding nearest Joker Ammo vending machine (or someone's trunk), but I think the process could be a bit more streamlined. You know the clothes slots in character window, allowing you to quickly change sets of clothes, right? Why not make the same with weapon load-out? 2 or 3 quick-change slots would be more than enough.

This would make the whole process much less painful, but still require you to be in a "Change" zone. I know many people who would be delighted with an improvement like that.

The HUD has certainly changed over the development processes. I agree that the old one did look somewhat better, but a to actually replace the one we have now is another thing.

I like this, but I think it should work more like the other customization features.


Thanks. I made a topic on that (Link), but as Omochabox stated many times.. It's just not something that's coming anytime soon. So I made that cheap alternative (at-leas I think its cheap, still waiting on an answer).

They're all gold. They're all along the lines of my suggestions, except I didn't think of them.

I'm still planning to do a bunch of suggestions on the music studio, but I'm still trying to work out how functionality can be expanded without sacrificing ease of use. I'm starting to think the only way it can be done is to offer a separate advanced mode, which would probably require a lot of development time. Between developing new content, combating cheaters and fixing bugs, I don't think Reloaded would ever get around to improving it.

Great suggestions people. Keep 'em coming! A while (and by a while I mean like a month) ago I was online and Omochabox was showing around a dev they rehired from RTW specifically to work on the UI. So let's see how long it takes before we see some of the suggestions in the game. :)

Don't know if this qualifies but better tools to tune the sound in game would be much appreciated. I want to hear the district voices and the gunfire and the engine sounds but the fact that i cant turn down one without all of them going down is anoying some of the cars are too load to hear your teamates over and the same with the gunfights going crazy. i assume this was to give the impression that your talking in the game so background sounds make that difficult but it just becomes a pain quickly.
