Colorfulz's Newb Guide to Enemy Spotting
(without them spotting you!) Introduction What I have noticed while playing in my 2 year span is that people often don't even care whether or not they are seen when attempting to find the enemy or not. I've seen level 40's walking around WITHOUT CROUCHING AT ALL (If you want to annoy me, that is how you do it)! It just frustrates me. So I have decided to make a guide to spot the enemy without him/her spotting you. Leaning This has got to be one of the simplest and best ways to keep out of the sight of the enemy while knowing where they are. Example: It's the first round on Khali and you have a bunch of new players on your team. You are NIU. They all rushed towards the plane and were killed in an instant (Situation is now a 1v4). You rush back to your base, knowing that they all may rush you. Luckily, they rush you one at a time. In the situation stated in the example, here is what to do: DON'T TRY TO RUSH THEM. That isn't smart. What should be used is leaning. LEANING IS YOUR BEST FRIEND. A good lean means that you will not be able to be hit by a bullet. There are many ways to lean, but I find the best way leaning left. By leaning left, the gun is coming across your body, which in this came means a much less wide lean. Leaning at the NIU spawn, like in the example, is a very smart idea. Most people will complain or compliment you if you have a good lean, so make sure you pay attention to that. Might as well throw this in (Thanks Chris): If they plant side bomb, you may consider yourself screwed, but if your going towards the vending machine, lean there, one of the better spots to lean. Crouching/Staying Quiet This is highly important for all of you new players to the game. People in this game may have very loud volume, headphones, or very good sound quality. RUNNING AND WALKING WILL GIVE AWAY ANY POSITION! If you are running/walking and an enemy is nearby, consider yourself dead. Here is how to properly crouch/stay quiet while being prepared to attack an enemy: The "Teabagging" Method (As I like to call it): This method is VERY simple, yet highly effective. I call this the "teabagging" method because that is basically all you are doing. This is also occasionally called Crouch-Walking. When you are on the move, simply "teabag" (C and Spacebar) the ground while moving. This is very helpful because it can get you prepared for a bunny hop in action or stay quiet in a 1v4. I like to use this with leaning, because this way completely throws the enemy off. They won't find you unless they have checked everywhere else. The "Tapping" Method: I also love this method even though I don't use it much. This method will not require any form of crouching. All that is required in this: you must have a lot of patience since you will be moving VERY slow. In this method, all you have to do is just keep tapping W. It will keep you quiet, while you will be moving at around the same speed as a normal crouch. This also will keep you standing up, which is good for leaning and when being moved into combat. I'd suggest using this method only when it's 1v1 or 1v2 in a match. Both of these methods can be seen in action starting at 1:52 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w1swa0BQmI Using the Environment This I have also come to enjoy using, and it is highly useful in all modes. Using your environment is ESSENTIAL in keeping good scores/having fun with the game. Here are some environmental tips that I may suggest: -Using trees and bushes are very, very important. Example: Cloud Forest. If you decide that you are going to sprint into the open, consider yourself done. Many snipers use bushes and trees, especially NIU since they blend in. -Using boxes, carts, plants, and such will be very helpful in mostly UO and CQC. For example, the plants and bushes in Khyber are very helpful if you would like to pop out and quickly attack the enemy. I find this useful for both sides in a game. -Using water in UO and BG is also extremely helpful. If you find yourself being base camped in Crater, you may just consider running to the water. The pilots tend to stay away from the water from when I've played, so find a position in or near the water and wait it out. When the other begins to slow down with the killing, move out and still attempt to stay hidden. Talking With Your Team I like to use this a lot. Communicating with teammates is very effective whether it's a scrim or just a public game. If it's 1v4 and your just running around, consider yourself dead. You may consider asking the following question when your last teammate dies: "Where?" I love that word. Your teammate should respond quickly, if they don't, try to stay around the same position. If they do respond quickly, attempt to lean or use the methods on staying quiet to attack a few of the enemies. Sniping No matter what sniper your involved with, whether it's M24, PSG, or SSG, sniping is an easy way to kill an enemy without them killing you. To get tips on how to be a good sniper, use TheJim's guide down in my "Other Guides" section. Sniping is key and here are a few tips to snipe without being caught: -Use unique spots, in other words spots that you found have good cover and not many other people use. This will throw a lot of people off when sniping. -Make sure you have a fairly clear shot at the enemy. If you spray at them, your position is blown. If it takes a few seconds and you don't even have a good shot, just watch where they go then move to a better position. -I don't know how much I can stress this to beginning snipers: DO NOT STAY IN A SINGLE SPOT. A lot of new snipers will use no cover and will shoot and then just stay in the same spot. If you shoot a shot and miss, then roll away from your spot and stay on the move til you find a newer one. Mini Map / Radar Map I have noticed that a lot of people do not take advantage of the wonderful radar that is located in the top right corner of their screens. Here are a few reasons that this radar can help you, and why you should start using it: -It shows where people are being shot at from! That's like GPS at the palm of your hands! -If you get familiar with a map well enough, you can run through a flash and run right back out of where you were flashed by just looking at your radar and using it for a sense of direction. -Can give away what people are using. If you see people fisting each other on the ramps in Khali with your radar and they are engineer, maybe you should expect M14's or Flashes around there. Just go to the other bomb and plant, that's what I do all the time. -By holding in T, you will be able to see the full map. Additions Thanks to Buggyball for this, you may consider watching for these few things though: Casting shadows, guns sticking through windows/walls, and make sure to have the gun you want to use out... the windows/walls part can help you/hurt you in finding the enemy or them finding you. Thank you Fattie for this: "Quick tip for all you nubs out there, since you can't start running with spawnshield on when you spawn, it is best to roll 4 times right after you spawn in certain maps, 2 in some maps and then start running. This way you get a small start ahead of the other team, and can "rush nade" first. Another quick tip: never rush into a spot where you know the enemy is without having at least half of your SP charged. For rush nading on derb khali, here is a quick demonstration and why the 4 spawn rolls are needed on this side/map. http://www.xfire.com/video/b3ae8/" Thank you for taking your time on reading my first guide, please give me some feedback. you don't have to use the bug lean to be able to see around corners, just lean a bit off, you can't shoot at targets right now, but you can see all that approach.
if leaning watch out for 4 fatal errors. -shadows 1, leaning at wall near a light zone (or whatever its called) will cast a shadow of you on the ground next to where you stand, enemy's can see that and will likely trow a nade in to blow you away. -shadows 2, leaning on a high surface like a balconey will cast a shadow straight through the floor. enemy's passing by below will know you are there, and you havn't seen him/her yet. -weird physics, long guns like the M16a1, snipers and minniguns will stick through thin walls, so if you lean don't pick a flimsy door...he will see you. -always have the gun out you want to shoot the target with, betraying you'reself on the last second because you had to switch guns or reload would be a pitty. -------------------- Good soldiers rely first upon their training, then upon their instincts. Be as fast as lighting, and you will be just as deadly, for the first blow is the most important, It often negates the need for a second. |

I wouldn't worry about using this in BG, you can sprint across the whole map without getting caught in some intances. I love using the tapping method, but I don't have enough patience to do it for a long time. -------------------- ![]() Just looking out on the day of another dream. |

The tapping method though can be heard if you accidently hold it for too long. Oh yes, and if people continue to give me good feedback I'll make sure to edit the guide a bit.. -------------------- ![]() Just looking out on the day of another dream. |

I already learned how to lean. I do this in Velruf if your on Derbs side. I go to the left hall and wait for them to throw all their nades then just wait patiently there.
